Beau Bartmoss

"Hell is empty and all devils are here."

Character Info

At a glance

Name: Beau Bartmoss

Alias: Avery ⋮ AV ⋮ ᐱᐯ ⋮ The Phantom

Age: Classified

Occupation: Netrunner ⋮ Baker (coverup)

Appearance

Beau is a cis human male who looks like he is in his 30s (his real age is never revealed). He is 5’8’’ and rather muscular. His physical appearance is as one would expect from an average organic man as his cyberware is mostly hidden apart from the ones on his neck and face. Even then, Beau tends to cover them up as well so as not to arouse suspicion from corps and average Joes alike.

Personality

Groomed to be an unfeeling netrunner, Beau has developed two personas, one being the cold-blooded Phantom and another his natural, soft self. Not many get to see the latter. When interacting with his fixers and clients though, Beau maintains his no-nonsense attitude minus the callousness. In fact, he is always referred to as Avery or AV for his mercwork since nobody knows what he looks and sounds like in Realspace. He is paranoid, an acquired trait from his mentor.

But beneath all that, Beau is a melancholic and brooding man. To keep himself sane, he enjoys cooking in his downtime, hence his coverup job as a baker. Food makes him happy and other people talk—a powerful tool indeed. That also highlights his manipulative mind. It is, therefore, not surprising that he, just like his late mentor, always manages to give the corpos the slip.

Backstory

Beau is Rache Bartmoss’ last surviving mentee and protege.

Not much is known about his childhood apart from the fact that he came from a well-to-do but troubled family of Corpos based in Night City. Since young, Beau has taken great interest in and shown an exceptional aptitude for computer science. Something went awry along the way, however, which eventually spurred the wayward Beau on to leave his family at the age of 16. As luck would have it, Rache was the one to find, save and shelter him. He also began to teach Beau the way of the Web, seeing how keen and brilliant the young man was. Since then, Beau dropped his old family name and adopted Bartmoss instead, much to Rache’s amusement and eventual blessing.

Some who are aware of the duo used to claim that he was also Rache’s lover at one point, but Beau neither confirmed or denied it. Ever since Bartmoss’ descent into paranoia and eventual demise, Beau could only observe on the sidelines as his former mentor pushed everyone away and led a life of a fugitive—never to be found or heard from again. Decidedly, Beau was heartbroken.

A rogue netrunner, Rache had conditioned Beau to harbor hate for corporations. Every single day after his mentor’s supposed death, he would channel this deep hatred into his craft to better himself and continue Bartmoss’ legacy.

Blaming Rache’s premature end on corps, Beau has been working tirelessly as a netrunner (code name: Avery or AV) and attacked their network every now and then (earning himself an alias of the Phantom) in a bid to extract information on what had really transpired in the early 2020s. So far, there have only been postulations but no real evidence.

Now that he is equipped with the relevant skillset and technology, Beau has come up with another potential solution: to head back in time to forestall his mentor’s demise or at the very least, get a closure they never had.

Skills and Attributes

Being the legendary Rache Bartmoss’ protege, Beau is undoubtedly a skilled and fearsome netrunner.

He possesses a keen mind and has developed his own Demon program series called DÆMON reminiscent of his mentor’s to aid in his many cyberattacks in the past.

Based on unaugmented human’s standards, Beau is fit. His reflex is also honed as he wields and trains religiously with his frosted blade called Corruption, an inverse thermal blade that utilises deep-freeze technology to shatter other weapons upon impact. It also houses his expanded cyberdeck, allowing him to carry a dizzying array of the standard Quickhacks and his very own creation, Functions, to support him in his job and deadly confrontations if need be.

His special abilities include:

Possession: For applicable subjects, Beau can system reset the individual and transfer his consciousness into said person for a limited period of time. This grants him full control of the subject’s anatomy.

Mirror: For applicable subjects, Beau can seize control of the individual’s optics as one would a normal surveillance camera. The person would not notice anything amiss as Beau is merely a spectator and does not have direct control over what the subject sees.

Mirage: For applicable subjects, Beau can induce hallucinations in the individual. This is especially useful when he wants to go undetected or torture his subject.

Weaknesses

High temperature: His special implants don’t fare well under hot weather for an extended period of time. Symptoms may include blurred vision, lethargy, headache and an overall sense of indisposition.

Marksmanship: Beau is not at all trained in gun handling. He can shoot but only as the last resort because he is simply awful at it.

Physical strength: While in shape, Beau is no match against someone with an augmented physique. His body also cannot accept another cyberware to rectify this shortcoming because it is already at its limits.

Pseudo-cyberpsychosis: In his own words, he is “one cyberware away from going full cyberpsycho”. His overexposure to mind-altering substances, synapse-straining enterprises and myriads of netrunning implants makes him extremely volatile and dangerous.

Limiters: Initially unbeknownst to Beau, Rache had installed limiters to his cyberdeck after Beau himself went momentarily rogue during their cyber-excursion to hack one of Militech’s Mainframe Devices. Because Rache left without removing said limiters, Beau’s cyberdeck would be rendered unusable for a time if too many DÆMON, Quickhacks and/or Functions are uploaded at one time.

Special abilities’ limitations: While powerful, these abilities are especially draining and have very long cooldown periods. Prolonged use causes dizziness, nausea and even coma. Should these symptoms arise, the abilities also become inaccessible for up to 24 hours.

Possession’s drawback: This feat leaves Beau extremely vulnerable to attack from both Realspace and cyberspace. When activated, Beau’s own body will enter a comatose state, leaving him immobile and defenceless. Any interference, physical or otherwise, during the transmission will also adversely affect his synapses which could lead to serious injuries.

Double-edged sword: Since Corruption expands his cyberdeck, it is linked to his neural network. Should the blade sustains any damages, Beau will very likely be incapacitated too.

Time-hopping constraint: Outside the Cyberpunk universe, Beau’s sublime netrunning skills would be greatly dampened because of the technological incompatibility. This is also possibly due to the fact that the denizens at that time may not have any implants linked to their neural networks, so they are impervious to his attack. Essentially, that reduces him to an average hacker.

RP Premise

Notwithstanding his intelligence, Beau has never attempted this time-traveling method before, so it is inevitable that mistakes would happen. When it does though, he is left stranded in the past (or our present time) with seemingly no way to return. To hide his true identity, Beau sets out to work as a baker to sponsor his search for Rache and assemble all the pieces of technology required to transport him back to the Neon Dystopia of 2077.

Please note that this account’s multiverse allows Beau to exist in multiple locations and times simultaneously, but that does NOT mean he can actually do that in the lore itself.
